DEROIT – Honda Motor and yet-to-be-named joint venture partners plan to invest $11 billion in Ontario, Canada, to create a "comprehensive EV value chain," the Japanese automaker announced Thursday. Honda said vehicle production will begin in 2028, with annual vehicle capacity of 240,000 units once it's fully operational. Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau said during a livestreamed press conference Thursday that Honda's investment, $15 billion Canadian, is the largest ever for the country's automotive industry. The investment is a major win for Canada and comes after Honda last year confirmed a $4.4 billion investment for a new U.S. battery plant in Ohio.

Dealers have been warning of slowing EV demand for months. While GM's about-face was somewhat of a surprise to investors, the Detroit car company is not alone in this new view of the EV future. Just a few months after dealers have started coming forward to warn of slowing EV demand, manufacturers appear to be catching up to that reality. In July, the company extended its self-imposed deadline to hit annual electric vehicle production of 600,000 by a year, and abandoned a 2026 target to build 2 million EVs . In scrapping plans with GM to co-develop sub-$30,000 EVs, Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe said the shifting EV environment was difficult to gauge.

GM cited a joint statement that pointed to the projects the companies are still working on together in acknowledging the end of EV plan. A spokesman confirmed she was referring to the Honda EV partnership. The automakers had said the deal was for "affordable" EVs, including compact crossover vehicles, built using GM's Ultium battery technology. "After studying this for a year, we decided that this would be difficult as a business, so at the moment, we are ending development of an affordable EV," Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe was quoted by Bloomberg as saying in an interview.

While other automakers like Volkswagen AG (VOWG_p.DE) have also been caught out by the sharp shift in China, Japanese automakers stand out because of their limited showing in the fast-growing category of electric and plug-in hybrid sales. Mitsubishi, like some other Japanese automakers, does not break out China sales figures. Industry data analysed by Reuters showed its first-quarter sales in China fell by 58% from a year earlier. Nissan Motor Co Ltd (7201.T) posted a 45.8% drop in China sales and Mazda Motor Corp (7261.T) sales were down 66.5% in the first quarter. "Japanese automakers could face a similar struggle in the United States as in China," he said.

TOKYO, April 28 (Reuters) - Japan will provide as much as $1.8 billion in subsidies for a slate of storage battery and chip-related projects, Industry Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura said on Friday, marking Tokyo's latest push towards greater supply chain security. The government plans to give up to 184.6 billion yen ($1.38 billion) in subsidies for eight storage battery-related proposals and up to 56.4 billion yen for two semiconductor-related projects, Nishimura told reporters. Among the proposals that it will subsidise is a plan by automaker Honda Motor Co Ltd (7267.T) and battery maker GS Yuasa Corp (6674.T) to invest about 430 billion yen to boost storage battery production, with the ministry providing up to 158.7 billion yen in subsidies for the project. "We have great expectations that this will lead to the stable supply of storage batteries and the promotion of GX (green transformation)," Nishimura said. In a statement, Honda, GS Yuasa and their 14-year-old battery joint venture Blue Energy Co Ltd, said they planned to start production in April 2027 and would start mass production in October 2027.

Sony Honda Mobility plans a global roll-out that includes Europe, parts of Asia and the Middle East, he added. Sony Honda Mobility also is contemplating selling the vehicle in China, which Mizuno described as an attractive but intensely competitive market for electric vehicles. The joint venture is discussing how to service the vehicles.
TOKYO, Dec 7 (Reuters) - Honda Motor Co (7267.T) said on Wednesday it would begin selling micro-sized commercial electric vans in spring 2024, as part of its effort to electrify its vehicle lineups. Japanese automakers are turning to small commercial trucks as one way to make battery electric vehicles (BEVs) popular in the country, tapping into car size unique to the country amid pressure to slash its carbon footprint. Honda's electric van has a target cruising range of 200km (125 miles) and is seeking to set the price at around 1 million yen ($7,270). Commercial vehicle coalition CJPT, led by Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T), said in July it would develop small electric commercial vans with minivehicle specialists Daihatsu and Suzuki Motor Corp (7269.T). Honda in April laid out goals of producing some 2 million electric vehicles a year and 30 electric vehicle models globally by 2030.
